Re: Re: Rutilated Cape May Diamond??

Thanks, Don!

On Thursday when I take the stones out of the pre-polish round in the tumbler, I'll pull the rutilated one out and scan it before it goes in for polish. But there's no doubt in my mind that this is rutilated. Where it originated, who knows??? Most of the "diamonds" -- the really clear water-tumbled quartz bits -- are on the Delaware Bay side and, according to what I've read online and in an old R&G article, originate 200 or so miles north around the Delaware Water Gap. This appears also to be the source for the pinkish "apricotine" agate/jasper that was common on the beach. I haven't been able to find a single word about any of the stuff there being rutilated, so maybe this particular stone came from Brazil, for all I know!!!

My son-in-law's mother knows absolutely nothing about rocks -- she just happened to pick up this one. And it sure didn't even hint at the rutile until I got it home and took a close look at it, so I tend not to think it was something someone had picked up or even bought somewhere else and then accidentally dropped. It wasn't big enough to be worth buying.

So I guess it's just a nifty little freak of nature that I get to enjoy!

I did also enjoy Cape May and all its neat old Victorian homes. It was a great place to vacation, especially with the now one-year-old grandson. He doesn't seem to be too much into rocks -- at least not yet -- but he loves the animals. Calls everything, including seagulls, "Dog! Dog!"
