Re: Re: Rock hounding Eureka Utah

Ozzy,
Can just about guarantee that the "book" you are referring to is probably Mitchell's "Gem Trails of Utah." In a few words, I don't think the guy has ever been here. Yeah you can collect around Eureka/Tintic and sometimes you will find something but for all rights and purposes the area is CLOSED. The mines are sealed or patrolled, every mine within the immediate vicinity of the city of Eureka is posted and the do prosecute!

Have to agree with Dave, Topaz area is much more productive. if you are interested drop me a line and I'll be happy to send you some maps and loacations of the areas my sweetheart and I wander around on a regular basis. If you don't realize it, Topaz Mtn. is just up the road from the Dugway Geode Beds.

When we take people out we try to hit Dugway, the south end of the Thomas Range, which includes Topaz Mountain, the Drum Mtns, for some of the most spectacular jasper and agate in the country and then a few "other" places that we have discovered and enjoy working.

Oh, about that book. Makes good fire starter. Unfortunately most of the books about Utah are pathetically inadequate, inaccurate and for the most part written by incompetents who never saw more than the salt flats as they passed through but "borrowed" from every one they could find.

Drop me a line if you are going to be in the area.
