Re: How to orient a star Ruby for a cabochon

Hello Phil;

To align the star, the crystal's c-axis needs to be perpendicular to the plane of the cabachon. OK, how do you find the c-axis? If the stone will transmit light, place it between crossed polaroids. The two lenses from an old pair of Polaroid sun glasses will work. Hold the lenses so they are crossed. No light should come through. Insert the stone between them. Most likely you will see colored light where the stone is. Turn the stone until no light comes through. The c-axis is now perpendicular to the two polaroids. That is the "up" position for the cabachon and the star.

I hope this helps.

Don
