tumbling gas

Hi everyone,
i do a lot of tumbling,
occasionally there is gas build- up in the tumbler that needs to be released, this does not seem to happen too often,
i have seen this phenomenon described in some articles i have on tumbling, however i have not seen a good explanation of what and how,
in otherwords, can any of you give me tell me what the gas is and why it is produced (what the science is behind it) and, if possible, why it is produced in some cases and not others

thanks
