I have fashioned a cheap plastic bowl to fit into the pan and sits on the rubber ring. I use an elastic cord to hold it down when in motion. This helps to keep the grit and slurry wetter longer. I found without a lid the water would splash out and dry up so I fabricated this up. It will also help in your worry about any air contamination. Adding a cloth over top of the unit will also catch any particals as well. I hope this helps you in some way.
