Re: Locating Mines in NH

Too many "lists" on internet are vague, erroneous, and not useful. There are sources of information, one being a booklet "New Hampshire Mines and Mineral Localities" (or Locations", or a title much like that) by Philip Morrill, 1960. This lists the sites first by township, then by mine, with directions for many of them, and coordinates (an old style of coordinate) for most of them. I believe that copies of this are still available (try an internet search?). One has to realize, however, that this booklet of 1960 is somewhat dated by now, and some of the directions would have been (were there an updated version, which there isn't) changed by now, and some of the mines have been changed, and access and permission-status of most of them have been changed greatly.
I have a system to convert the old style of coordinates (in this book) to latitude-longitude coordinates, on a spread-sheet program. I have also listed some updated information on some of the sites (a few of which I have visited) in eastern N.H. (where I currently reside).
Club members may or may not help out regarding mineral localities. This depends upon many factors. Not all that glitters is gold. But there can be gems (figuratively speaking) if you know how to look and find them. There are very few actual gems to be found on the dumps of the old mines, as so many have been so picked over by collectors for years. However, when one learns about minerals, there can be found many interesting things, and if one likes the detective-work in hunting for old sites in the woods, one can have quite a nice field day, particularly in such nice weather as in the autumn in this area.
