Re: 8x8inch Milky Quartz with cavity of clear crystals
Hello Aaron, I recently went on a field trip to northern Wisconsin. The club I was with visited one of the older (no longer operational) iron ore mines. We were allowed to dig through some of the tailings that are currently being removed for roadfill I imagine. I came across the find of the day. About a 150-200 lb. rock that had some crystals showing. After spending some time reducing this monster down to managable sizes I had noticed some orangy powder inside several cavities, along with some paper like material. We had a geologist as part of the group on hand and I gave some samples to him to be tested. His first thoughts were that the powder was an iron oxide and the paper was something called mountain leather as I recall. Still waiting to hear from my brother-in-law to find out if the results came back yet. When I find out I will post the results. As a side note, I have many pockets of smokey quartz to show for my hard labor. Take care
