The laps you describe sound like Dyna Disks. A machined aluminum hub was used to mount them on a standard sized spindle, so they were useable on a wide variety of machines. They required the use of a master lap beneath them to prevent them from flexing.

My understanding is the Dyna Disks were made using recycled computer hard drive disks. They were fairly popular in that they were less expensive than standard electrobonded diamond laps. They were produced in varying diamond meshes for grinding and pre-polishing, and also with oxide coatings like cerium and alumina for polishing

I have several Dyna Disks that I purchased perhaps 12 years or so ago, including a 50-60 grit that I still use on occasion for roughing in and preforming big stones.
