Anna, I suggest starting by teaching the students the difference between a rock and a mineral. Then get them to sort your "collection" accordingly. If you can, enlist a local rockhound to come in and look over the result and talk to your students about what he/she does. Then try the Rock Key on the rocks and the Mineral Key on the minerals. It doesn't matter if mistakes are made, as long as the observations match the conclusions. In this case, the process is probably more important than the results.
