Alan,

Refer to my comments on polishing Lapis a few days ago. The only step that I didn't mention is that I do my initial sanding with a worn 220 grit silicon carbide belt, then go to the diamond belts. I get a very good polish on softer stones by following these steps. If you have any questions email me.
